The third-placed Tigers held on though, moving two points behind second-placed Warrington Wolves and four off leaders St Helens.
Castleford opened up a 22-0 lead inside 24 minutes.
James Clare touched down after Mason Caton-Brown failed to take Jake Trueman's kick and, after Jesse Sene-Lefao barged his way over, the winger took a fine offload from Mike McMeeken to score again.
Corey Aston then crossed on his Tigers debut before Caton-Brown got Wakefield on the board in the 32nd minute with a spectacular finish in the corner.
Greg Minikin jinked his way over at the start of the second half for the Tigers, shortly before Caton-Brown crossed for his second.
Peter Mata'utia kicked a penalty, but Wakefield came storming back to make it 28-26 with 10 minutes remaining.
Joe Arundel went in at the corner, debutant Ben Reynolds finished a fine break from Max Jowitt and Tinirau Arona scored to give Cas a fright.
